Do you suffer from blepharitis or dry eye? Have you heard about the new treatment, BlephEx, but are unsure if it is right for you? At C-Luminous EyeCare in Charlottesville, VA, we use BlephEx as a treatment for blepharitis and dry eye. Here's what you need to know.
Symptoms of Blepharitis
Over 30% of patients seen by our optometrist are here for blepharitis, a common cause of dry eyes. Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids that results in red eyes, crusty eyes, watery eyes, excessive tearing, grittiness, and a burning or itching sensation. While most patients have minor symptoms, some cases are more severe and can cause blurred vision, missing eyelashes, and corneal infections. Always see a healthcare professional if you are experiencing new or worsening eye symptoms, especially if you have already begun to have blurred vision.
Causes of Blepharitis
Causes of this chronic condition include fungal infections, parasites such as the eyelash mite, bacterial infections, and meibomian gland dysfunction. Finding the cause of blepharitis and treating will reduce the number and severity of symptoms experienced.
Two Types of Blepharitis
There are two distinctive types of blepharitis. Posterior blepharitis affects the inner edges of the eyelid while anterior blepharitis affects the outside front of the eyelashes. Our optometrist will be able to assess your symptoms to determine which type of blepharitis you are experiencing. Both types of blepharitis can be treated with the BlephEx system.
BlephEx for Dry Eyes and Blepharitis
BlephEx is a spinning medical grade sponge device designed to carefully remove the debris and build up along the eyelash. It is an in-office procedure that helps relieve the most bothersome symptoms of blepharitis. It is more effective than over the counter eye drops. Following BlephEx treatment, patients experience less redness and irritation. It is a non-invasive procedure, and it takes only a few minutes to complete. In addition to removing debris, reducing inflammation, and reducing redness, the procedure also helps clean the eyelash and remove bacteria and biofilm. These treatments can be performed monthly to help stave off chronic blepharitis.
