Dry Eyes and Lipiflow Treatment
Dry eye syndrome occurs when the body does not produce tears that lubricate your eyes properly. Dry eyes lead to damage to the eye's surface. The symptoms are burning or scratching sensation, sensitivity to light, eye redness, difficulty wearing content lenses, watery eyes, and blurred vision. Causes of dry eyes are hormone changes, inflamed eyelids, blockages in the meibomian gland, medications, age, and allergies. Here at C-Luminous Eye Care, we treat dry eyes with eye drops, eye inserts that produce tears, silicone plugs, Tearcare, and Lipiflow treatment.
Our newest treatment is the Lipiscan that is used to diagnose blocked meibomian glands in the eyelid. This procedure will tell if the glands are blocked causing dry eyes. Lipiflow is an FDA approved treatment for unblocking these glands safely in your eyes. This treatment heats and massages the inner eye and unblocks the substances that block the glands. These glands produce the oil in the top layer of tear film that protects your eyes. It is now one of the best treatments for blocked meibomian glands. This treatment is not for everyone. Our optometrist will give you a comprehensive eye exam to determine if Lipiflow is right for you. We take referrals from primary care physicians and service the Charlottesville area.
How We Can Help Dry Eyes
When you come in for an exam, our chiropractor will give you a comprehensive eye exam, measure your tear volume and quality using strips and dyes, and analyze tear samples. We will scan your meibomian glands by using a Lipiscan imager that stores images of the upper and lower gland in your eyes. The device works quickly and takes about one to two minutes. Each eye will be looked at. You put your chin in the rest and the image is taken using a small tool.
The images taken are clear and are used to properly examine your eyes. We use this test on all ages as blocked glands can occur in children causing problems with dry eyes. This scan can help identify other issues with the glands, so we can prescribe the right treatment. After the images are analyzed, our team can determine if Lipiflow treatment is right for you.
Lipiflow treatment takes 12-15 minutes in the office. It is a single-use device that is placed under and over the eyelid delivering energy to the glands that remove the substance blocking them. The activators deliver heat and pressure to the inner eyelids. It is called a vector thermal pulse and creates pressure on the eyelids. The best results come about 6-8 weeks after treatment. The oil produced by the glands is essential for healthy tears. You will find blocked glands are the cause of many patients with dry eyes.
